A Good Life Cafe

I worked as a nail tech at a salon on 25th St in Ogden a few years ago. 25th St is my very favorite street in the entire world. If you live in Northern Utah and have never been, you really need to check it out. When I was working there, I found A Good Life Cafe, and I fell in love!

It is an all natural, organic, healthy, good for you restaurant. They use fresh, local ingredients in everything they make. They have a set menu with smooties, fresh-pressed juices, sandwiches, and salads. Then, they have a daily menu with two soups of the day-usually one vegan and one with meat but a lot of the times both soups are gluten-free. They have a smoothie of the day, sandwich of the day, and entree of the day which is usually some kind of quinoa.

Last week they had my very, very favorite entree, the veggie tacos. Oh my gosh, they are soooo good. They're packed with grilled veggies and topped with their house-made mango, black bean salsa. I can't even handle the goodness. I haven't been able to eat there as often as I used to because of school but I had to go for the tacos. They have a facebook page where they list their daily specials, go follow it!

Below are some pictures of my 3 favorites from A Good Life- the fresh mozzarella sandwich, veggie tacos, and the sweet potato quinoa. Chance's favorite is the club sandwich and my kids love the mac 'n cheese. You need to check it out, you will love it!

Easter Dress

I hope you're all having a great Easter! This is one of my favorite holidays. We have tons of fun family traditions. When I was little, my siblings and I always got new Sunday clothes for Easter and I have carried that on with my kids. I got some fun pics of them today. *I'm not a photographer, these are just for fun*. I have also been reflecting today on the ultimate sacrifice Jesus Christ made for each and every one of us. Because of him, I will be with my family forever. I am overwhelmed with gratitude at the thought of what he did for me. I'll leave you with that thought and some cute pics of my littles. Enjoy!

Everything is from Gymboree except Scout's shoes which are from Sweet N Swag.

Marley and Scout's vintage mermaid room

I have had my girl's room half-done since we moved in last June. I already had most of the stuff and just had to get around to actually hanging it! Marley has been on my case about it so I decided to finish it so she could be surprised when she got home from St George on Sunday. I think it turned out pretty cute!

This bed came from my grandma's late husband. It was his son's in the 50's and had been sitting in my grandma's basement for years. I love it so much and think the naturally chipped paint looks awesome! I got the nautical pillows from Target last summer. I was actually going to do a different theme and almost got rid of them. I'm so glad I didn't. My mother in law gave Marley the floral quilt. I really want pink, seahorse sheets so if you know where a girl might be able to get some, give me a hint!

This gallery wall is what I worked on over the weekend. I couldn't love it more than I do. The pictures of my girls were taken by Amber Togisala and I got the frames from Hobby Lobby. I got the blue seahorse from Hobby Lobby as well. The mermaid and "the world is your oyster" sign came from The Swanky Plank. The marquee letters come in a kit to decorate them for your space and can be purchased at Joann Crafts. My sister in law gave me the star and mirror a long time ago but you can find similar ones at Tai Pan. I painted the gold seashell and the crown came from a flea market in Texas!

This crib was refinished by my cousin who does Simply Beautiful Creations. Check her out, she's amazing. I got the sheets from Target. Most of their crib sheets are $10, awesome right?

Here are the rest of the random finishing touches that pull it all together. Thanks for checking it out!

Anniversary part 2- our love story

Chance and I were set up on a blind date by my cousin, Ashley and Chance's best friend, Dusty. I was 17 and a junior in high school and Chance was 18 and a freshman in college. Our first date was a double date with Ashley and Dusty, thank goodness because Chance and I were painfully shy. I honestly think we said 20 words to each other on the entire date. Although I thought he was so cute, I didn't think we would ever go out again because we were too shy. To my surprise, he text me two days later and we broke the ice over text for a few days. Then he asked me out again for that weekend and we doubled again. We talked a lot more on that date and I knew I really liked him. Chance took things nice and slow. He didn't hug me til our third date, hold my hand til our fourth, and didn't kiss me til our thirteenth. I didn't think that kiss was ever going to be had. But you know they say, good things come to those who wait!

Even though we were so young, we both knew there was something different about our relationship and knew pretty quick into it that we would get married someday. When we had been dating for six months, Chance left to Nauvoo, Illinois on an LDS service mission. He played the drums in the Nauvoo Brass Band and did various service projects for the church. He was gone for four months and we weren't allowed to talk at all during that time besides writing letters back and forth. When I graduated from high school, I moved two hours south of where we live and did a semester at Snow College. It didn't strike my fancy so I moved back. A year later, I moved to northern California to nanny for the most amazing family. Chance and I continued to date during all of this and when I came home for Christmas, we got engaged. I went back and nannied for two more months and then moved home and we were married March 21, 2008.

Since getting married, we have had 8 years of crazy adventures together! We welcomed our first baby girl, Marley in August of 2008. If you do the math, yes, I was pregnant when we got married! We were sealed in the Temple on our one year anniversary. In October of 2010, we had our second baby, a little boy named Diesel. I get tired just thinking about all of that happening in two years! Fast forward to January 2015 when we had our third baby, a cute little girl named Scout. We have lived in an apartment, two townhouses, and now, our little bungalow. Chance has gone to EMT school, I have gone to nail technician school, and am now in cosmetology school.

Like I said yesterday, life has definitely thrown us some curveballs. I am still wondering why nobody warned me how hard it would all be at times, ha! Chance has type 1 (juvenile) diabetes and even though he takes excellent care of himself, it is always something we have to worry about. When I am pregnant, I throw up violently all day, everyday until I have those babies. That definitely takes a toll on me as well as our marriage physically and emotionally. We were without health insurance for the first 6 years of marriage and we got thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars in medical debt. It was really scary at times and that definitely took it's toll on us. Just like every marriage, we have had a number of other things that we never expected to happen and we have had our ups and downs. There have been times that I have wanted to quit. There have been times that I have wondered why we ever got married in the first place. And there have been times that I think we both have wanted to kill each other!

To say that marriage is hard is an understatement. I don't think there has been or will ever be anything that I will have to work at as much as this. But when they say that the hard things in life are the most worth it, it couldn't be more true. With all of the trials that we have endured, I don't think there is anything that could tear us apart. If we hadn't gone through these things together, we wouldn't have the love for each other that we have now. When we became parents, my love for Chance grew a million times. He is such a good dad to our kids. When he gets home from work, he helps with homework, gives them baths, helps with dinner, cleans, etc. He is so hands-on and I am so lucky to have that. Chance works so hard to provide for our family and always puts us before himself. He is hands down the most talented person I have ever met. If he doesn't know how to do something, he can learn it and learn it well. He makes me want to be the best version of myself. If I am having a bad day, he always knows exactly how to cheer me up. When I'm having anxiety, he knows how to calm me down. If I think I'm chubby, he tells me I'm pretty! I can't think of anyone else that I would rather spend this crazy adventure with. He is my person and I love him. Thanks for the amazing 8 years babe. Here's to many more to come!

Anniversary Part 1

Tomorrow is my 8th anniversary! I do not know how it has already been that long. Time just flies by guys. I wanted to do something really awesome for Chance this year because our lives have been so busy lately and we had a newborn last year so we didn't do anything too exciting. We have known for a while now that our two oldest kids would be on a mini vacation with my in-laws this weekend so my plans worked out perfectly!

A few years ago, my best friend Celeste took me to a restaurant in Park City called Lespri. It is a really fancy-schmancy steak house that is so delicious. I have wanted to take Chance there ever since so I decided that's where we were going to go.

I was just going to get a babysitter for Scout and we would have a dinner date and then come home. Well I decided on Friday to see if I could get any last minute deals on a hotel. I actually got really lucky and found a room at The Grand Summit Hotel for $150! On every other site I looked, it ranged from $450-$650 for the same exact night. I couldn't pass up such a good deal. So I booked it! I couldn't find an overnight babysitter for Scout because it was so last minute but I knew we would still have a great time with her along for the ride!

My friend Mykael is a professional makeup artist and I asked her a few months ago if she would do my makeup for the grand event, haha. Luckily, she was able to get work off and do it for me. If you have a special event or just want to learn how to apply makeup like a pro, you should go to her. She is amazing! She made me feel so pretty for our date.

So with gorgeous makeup, an upscale steakhouse, and a four-star resort, we were going to have the time of our lives, right? Wellllll. Almost everything that could have gone wrong, did! First we got to the hotel and our reservations were messed up. We thought we were getting the master suite and they accidentally put us in a regular room. We tried to upgrade but they were completely booked. The room we got was still really nice but we were just disappointed that it wasn't what we were expecting. Then we go to the restaurant. I don't want you to be turned off by what I'm going to tell you because I think it was just an off night for them. I still highly recommend trying it and I will go back there myself. But, Chance's steak came out bloody and he ordered it med-well. My food was completely cold. And the worst part of it all was that a little boy at the table right next to us threw up EVERYWHERE. Nothing ruins your appetite like that! I got out to the car and started crying!! I felt like everything was getting ruined.

Chance suggested that we go look at the outlet mall so we headed over there and had fun. He has been wanting these Converse for probably 2 years now so I told him to get them! My friend Jenn has gotten me on a bad addiction- Coach bags. I haven't ever purchased one for myself but she has so generously gifted quite a few to me and I love them. We went to the Coach outlet but I didn't think I was going to buy anything, I just wanted to look around. Well their sale was so good, I couldn't resist. The original total for these two was $695 and I got them for $120 altogether, woot woot!!

When we were shopping, Scout started crying and pulling at her ear so we decided to head back to the hotel. By the time we got back, she was inconsolable and had a fever. I knew it was going to be a long night. I called the front desk to see if we could work something out and they said I needed to talk to the third party company that I booked with. I called and emailed them but they're closed weekends. I didn't just want to be out the money so we stayed. She was miserable all night. Look at that cute little stink though!

Pretty much any expectation I had for this weekend went completely opposite. I was pretty bummed but I have thought about it a lot and there are a lot of parallels to our marriage! I didn't even think I would go on a second date with Chance after our first. Once I knew I would marry him, I didn't think we would be where we are now. We have had every physical, emotional, spiritual, and financial problem that you can imagine. Nobody warned me that marriage would be as hard as it has been at times! I didn't expect that we would go through what we have. If I could have a do over on this weekend, I probably would have stayed home, ha! But if I could have a do over on my marriage to Chance, I would have it the same a million times. Even though it has been hard, it has been the best, most rewarding thing I have and will ever do. I love that boy more than I can put into words. Tomorrow I will tell our love story and why I would do it over again and again and again!

St Patty's Treats

For family night tonight, we made treats for the kids to take to their friends at daycare on Thursday. I've seen a lot of similar versions of this but I made it my own so I thought I would share what we did. I loved these because they were simple, inexpensive, and something the kids could help with.

Supplies needed:
  • Cellophane bags
  • Small, clear, plastic cups
  • White candies for the clouds
  • Multi-colored candies for the rainbow
  • Yellow or gold candies for the gold
  • Scissors
  • Gold curling ribbon
  • Festive confetti (optional)
I just used Jelly Belly's for the whole thing to keep it simple, but other ideas would be mini marshmallows for the clouds, m and m's or skittles for the rainbow, and rolo's or chocolate coins for the gold.

Start by lining the bottom of the cups with your gold candies. Next, you will do layers of each color of the rainbow. Make sure to go backwards so that the red is on the top and the violet is on the bottom and the rest of the correct colors are in between. Lastly, you will top it off with your white candies or marshmallows. After you have all of your layers, put them in your cellophane bags. If you decide to buy confetti, put that in before the treats. Then you will tie and curl your gold ribbon.

They should look a little something like this. These took all of five minutes to make, required very little cleanup, and will be a fun treat for my kid's friends. If you try them out, I'd love to see your version too.

My Barbershop Job Shadow

The 1880's to 1940's were the golden age for barbershops. During this time, barbershops were classy places that men visited weekly and even sometimes daily (think face shaves). In 1904, Gillette began mass marketing the safety razor and the barbershops took their first hit. Then the depression came and mother's would cut their son's hair at home to save money. In the 1980's a new trend, the unisex salon came around and barbershops were almost non-existent.

But, the barbershop is making a HUGE comeback right now and it is awesome. We have been learning barbering in school and I even got to do my first straight-razor shave last week. I only nicked my brother a few times, ha. Although I do want to work in a full-service salon when I'm done with school, I really want to emphasize on barbering.

My husband has a friend named Raleigh who owns a barbershop in Kaysville. When Raleigh graduated from high school, he was trying to figure out what he was going to do. His dad saw an ad in the newspaper for a barbering school and suggested he do it. Raleigh graduated from barbering school and worked at a couple salons and then went to a barbershop. He eventually bought the barbershop and has been there ever since. Raleigh is also the chair for the board of cosmetology at the OWATC which is a huge accomplishment. I went and job shadowed him yesterday and it was so fun. I learned so much and have a list of new barbering supplies I think I now need! Here is Raleigh working his magic on a handsome young lad-

And here I am doing my first straight-razor shave on my brother. He's a brave soul!

I'm so glad I got to have this experience to further my education and I can't wait to refine my barbering skills.

My Balancing Act

For those of you still getting to know me, I need to give a little background about myself before I get into the good stuff of this post! Like my little "about me" section says, I have three kids. A 7 year old girl, a 5 year old boy, and a 1 year old girl. I am a licensed nail tech and up until recently, I have been a full time mom during the week and just did nails on Saturdays. I love to be social and I love to be creative so my part time nail job let me do both all while bringing in extra income for my family and allowing me to be with kids as much as I wanted.

I have wanted to do hair since I was a little girl. My plan was to go back to cosmetology school during the day once my youngest was in elementary. Well this last summer I kept having this feeling that I needed to start school. I kept brushing it off because that wasn't the plan and I have 3 little kids to take care of. The feeling didn't go away and I finally knew that it was what I was supposed to do. I went and enrolled and started in November. This has been a huge change for my whole family. My kids have never been in daycare so it has definitely been a curveball for them. Because they started daycare, I needed a way to pay for it so I took on a job sewing for my friend who has a darling online newborn photography prop business. I still do nails as well on Saturdays. Chance was always used to just getting up and getting ready and going to work. But now he has to help me get the kids ready in the morning and we take turns dropping them off.

I'm telling you all of this because our schedules went from pretty laid back to extremely jam packed overnight. We have all had to adjust. Since starting school, I have had so many sweet friends say to me in person or text me things like "How are you doing all this, you must be superwoman". First of all, you don't know how good you have made me feel. Every time someone has said something like this, I have been having a meltdown and it is just what I needed to hear at the time.

As moms in this day and age, there is so much pressure to look amazing, have kids that look like models, have a spotless house, a gourmet meal on the table, all while having time to work out and get 8 hours of sleep! I have found myself so many times looking at social media and being sad because I felt like all the moms around me were accomplishing all of this while I wasn't even checking one thing off that list that day. I have realized that it usually seems that way when in reality, we are all feeling exactly the same. I think the main reason we get this impression is because we all only post about the happy, exciting things happening in our lives. Obviously nobody wants to post about their kids in the same clothes they wore the day before, the dishes piled up in the sink, your hair that hasn't been washed in 4 days, etc.

But I think we can agree that we have all been there. Whether you are "just" a stay at home mom or you are a mom and a student, or a working mom, or any scenario in between, life is busy and hard. When I compare my situation of being a stay at home mom to my situation now of working, going to school, and being a mom, I don't think life was any easier when I was "just" a mom. Although it was a blessing to be with my kids all the time, being a mom is not only physically wearing, it is emotionally wearing and can take it's toll on you. I think that whatever situation you're in at the time, you find your challenges and the things you love.

So my answer to everyone who has asked how I do what I am doing, this is it-

1: Set Priorities
You cannot do it all so you have to decide what is most important to you. I go crazy when my house is a mess but since starting school, I have had to learn to just "let it go". I have had to learn that sometimes my house is going to be a mess but that means that I took time to take my kids to the park that day. The next day, my house might be clean but that means I went to bed a lot later than I would have liked. I have had to learn that I just have to take it one day at a time and what is most important to me that day.

2: Look At the Big Picture
When I say that I have had some meltdowns, I am not exaggerating. This has honestly been the hardest thing I have ever done. I am beyond exhausted All. The. Time. If I look at the here and now, I feel defeated really fast. But if I take a step back and look at the big picture, I am quickly reminded that this is a temporary situation. As soon as I finish school, I will be back to working part time, I will be with Chance and my kids a lot more, and I will be doing what I love. So during this process, I really try to focus on how lucky I am to be in school, have two really awesome jobs that feel more like hobbies, and that I have a husband and kids that are supporting me in reaching my dreams.

3: Find Great Child Care
I can't emphasize this one enough. If my kids were going somewhere everyday that I wasn't comfortable with, I wouldn't have made it one week in school. My kids are everything to me and if I don't feel like they are safe, happy, and well taken care of, I can't leave them. I did a ton of research for child care and I was able to find someone who takes excellent care of my kids. During this stressful time, I don't have to sit and wonder if they're ok when I'm away.

4: Do Something For You
This is a hard one for us ladies. We love to take care of everyone else before ourselves. We are constantly thinking of everything we need to get done. I believe that amidst all the chaos, it is crucial that we take time for us. This is the reason I started this blog. I have wanted to start one for a long time and I just felt like now was a good time. Because I am so busy, I don't want to do something for myself that takes me away from my family any more than I am already gone. This is a way of doing something that I enjoy and I can do it while the kids are working on homework or once they've gone to bed. Whether it's going for a walk or getting a massage, it is so important to take some time out for YOU!

5: Find Your "Why"
You have to have a "why". If you don't, you will quit when you are having a hard day. A few weeks ago, I hadn't slept at all, I didn't feel good, I was overwhelmed with school, and I really was considering dropping out. I went to some of my instructors sobbing. Once I started telling them that I was frustrated because I knew that this was what I was supposed to do so I didn't know why it was so hard, I remembered exactly why I was doing this. This is something I have wanted to do FOREVER. I know that when I'm done, I will be able make more money and I will be doing what I love and am passionate about. And lastly, I am setting an example to my kids of how important getting an education is to me and how hard work always pays off. The other night, I walked into the kitchen to this sight-

I was downstairs folding laundry and came up to her doing her dolls hair. It was the cutest, sweetest sight. I said I loved it and she said "mommy, I want to do hair just like you when I grow up". I knew that my decision to go back to school, as hard as it is at times, is exactly what I am supposed to be doing. No matter what phase of mom life you are in, I know that it is hard. But I know that it is so worth it. Just remember that we are all in the same journey and we are all doing the best we can. I look up to all you moms so much and your compliments have flattered me and picked me up more than you know. Thanks so much.

Easter Decor

I love holidays and Easter is one of my very favorites. Growing up, egg hunts were a pretty big deal.  My mom and aunts would fill plastic eggs as full as they could get them and while they hid them outside, the uncles would make sure that none of the kids were looking. Then we all gathered around the door and when that thing flew open, we ran like we were seeing the outside world for the first time ever lol. After we found all the eggs, we would sit around and see what we got. Now that all the cousins are grown up, we still get together and have the egg hunt with our kids, so much fun!

For Chance's family party, we get together with his parents and siblings and his dad holds two egg hunts- one for the kids and one for the adults. These particular eggs are filled with different amounts of cash and change. Every year, each family (Chance's siblings, their spouses and kids) ends up taking home around $200. If you can imagine, we get a little crazy searching for these eggs!

Of all the things I love about Easter, if I had to narrow it down to one thing, it would easily be Cadbury Mini eggs.

I also love decorating for Easter just like I do for every other occasion. It's always weird when Easter is in March because I feel like I should be decorating for St Patrick's Day. But Easter decor is so much cuter.

My mom gave me this cute, galvanized tin tray in October and I use it for all of my table centerpieces. I got the egg garland from Target for $8! My mom made the cute stitchery and gave me all of the other decor inside the tray but you can find the same or very similar ones at Tai Pan and Rod Works.

My mom has given me these three decorations the past few years and I think they're hilarious. I especially love the one on the right because I call everyone "my peeps"! I bet if you asked, my mom would make any of these and/or the stitchery cause she's awesome like that!

What are some of your favorite traditions for Easter? Do you love Cadbury Mini Eggs as much as I do? If so, you might be fighting me for them at Walgreen's the day after Easter! Show me all of your cute decorations, I'd love to see them.

Spring Fever

Whenever the season changes, I want a new wardrobe. I'm dying over these cute, affordable spring pieces! Links to each item below.

The Bungalow Kitchen

I just got my kitchen clean so I thought I better capture it before a tornado hits again! For some reason, my kitchen is the catch all for my kid's papers, backpacks, shoes, etc. We even have a mudroom that they have to pass to get to the kitchen and it all ends up here! When my kitchen is clean, I love it. It has obviously been updated but the charming built-ins were left and they add so much character to the room. Because houses of this era have a closed floor plan, I can't get just one big picture of the room.

This picture is looking from the back of the kitchen. Both of the mossy colored cabinets are original to the home. To have built-ins like this now would be considered an "extra" and would cost you extra. I love old homes because it was common to have these included.

This is the china cabinet that you can see in the left corner in the picture above. My grandma gave me the china that she got in the 1960's. She said that when she did her grocery shopping, she earned points and could redeem them for gifts and this is what she chose. I love the story behind this set and will treasure it forever because it came from my grandma.

This is the other cabinet on the right side. There's nothing special about it but I think it's really pretty. Behind the doors is an unorganized collection of plates, bowls, and cups. If you can't see the chaos, it's like it doesn't even exist, right?!

This view is looking in from the living room. With the updated cupboards, we have quite a bit of storage space. That cute, little, white door that is closed is a spice cabinet. It's just deep enough to fit spice jars and has enough shelving to fit about 200 of them. I don't know that I'll ever be that savvy of a chef to accumulate that but it's cute to look at.

If I have too many things on my counter, I get a little crazy. I can't even keep my toaster out. I was excited when I saw this open shelving because I can have cute kitchen decor and not feel like I have a cluttered mess. My very favorite thing on there is the blue Ball Mason jar. My friend gave it to me a few years ago and it dates back to 1910. I filled it with fake cherries that I got from Tai Pan trading and put a galvanized lid on it. I have a friend who is 85 and I told her that I love antique things. She pulled out the Yuban coffee can and told me I could have it! It's all rusted out on the bottom just how I would like it.

The only sad thing about this kitchen is that nothing gourmet ever happens in it! If you've ever seen the saying "this kitchen was made to dance in", it pretty much sums this right up. I used to hardly cook at all. It just isn't something that I have loved doing. But Chance and I realized how expensive it was to eat out all the time, not to mention it's not healthy. So we resolved to cook more. So it does happen almost every weeknight now. But it's seriously easy, boring, nothin' to write home about- meals. If you love to cook, or heck, even like to cook, please help me!!!

Sorry to get off subject. If you have made it this far and you're still reading, you deserve a treat! Just don't expect it to be homemade, ha!  I hope you all have the best night ever.
